No. I am based in Bengaluru and work with clients across India, plus remote clients in the UK and US. Being in the same city is convenient for early product conversations, but it has never been a requirement.
A staging environment from week one so you can see progress rather than take my word for it, regular check-ins at whatever cadence suits you, and code in your repository from day one. For clients outside IST I keep deliberate overlap hours rather than working fully asynchronously — it makes a real difference to how fast decisions get made.
In Bengaluru, yes, and for early product decisions an hour in a room often beats a week of messages. Elsewhere in India it is possible for larger engagements, though most projects run perfectly well without it.
